Common Tutoring Queries
What are your qualifications?
I have both a Bachelor of Arts and an Early Childhood Education certificate. I also completed a Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) certification and have 4 years experience teaching English to students in foreign countries. I've completed the KHT Montessori training and taught my own four children how to read before kindergarten. After I have guided enough students through the Barton Reading and Spelling system I will be able to certify as a Barton tutor as well.
How do you charge for your teaching services?
Lessons are $35 for 55 minutes. 55-minute lessons are ideal and reasonable as long as the student is old enough and has the stamina to focus for that duration. We do take breaks and play games, so most students are capable of this duration. To reserve your place, you will need to commit to a term of regular classes (as defined by Grasp Reading) and pay monthly tuition. Discounts are offered for 2 or more classes a week (which is the recommended pacing for any student in the Barton Reading and Spelling Program. For singular classes, payment is due at the time of the lesson. Monthly tuition is due at the first of each month. Payment can be made by e-transfer, cash or cheque for Canadian residents and by Paypal for US residents.
Where do you hold your teaching sessions?
In person lessons are available with Erica in her home. You can also opt to take online lessons from any location!
Do you have a cancellation policy?
I'm a mom and understand that things come up. I allow for flexible scheduling to help meet the needs of student's busy lives. For a full explanation of rescheduling and cancellation policies, please see: Policies.
What ages do you teach?
I am happy to teach any student from 3 to 100! I adapt my curriculums of choice for each student. I customize lessons and activities to suit the abilities and interests of my clients.
Do you teach EAL/ESL/EFL students?
After a free trial session, we will be able to determine if I am able to help your student with reading, spelling, and writing. A basic English vocabulary is necessary for success in English reading, but I am happy to work with young students on developing their English as an additional language and English reading skills simultaneously.
